Teaching Assistant (Hearing Impairment) – Luton

An exciting opportunity had arisen in a Luton primary school for a Teaching Assistant to support students who have varying levels of hearing impairment (HI).

Your new school, an OFSTED rated ‘Outstanding’ school will welcome you to their family warmly and will be highly supportive. You will be the newest addition to the team housed in the schools specialised Hearing Impairment department.

Each child in the HI department have been issued with an EHCP (Education and Health Care Plan) and therefore will each have a unique care plan for you and the HI team to work towards. The school uses Sign Supported English within KS1 and most students shift to a more auditory/oral approach and use spoken English to communicate and make maximum use of their hearing through technology to access spoken language. There will be some children where British Sign Language is a key communication tool.

The ideal candidate will have experience in working with children or adults with HI needs and will be familiar with some (or all) of the following training/certifications:

  • Sign Supported English
  • British Sign Language
  • Deaf Awareness training

You will be confident in working with students on a 1:1 basis, small group basis and assisting the class teachers where necessary. Your goal as the schools HI Teaching Assistant is to guide the children with additional needs to reach their full potential academically whilst improving their abilities in line with their special needs.
